Canyoning with Children: The Family Guide to Your First Tour

Canyoning with children? One of the best family activities there is – as long as you choose the right tour. Here you can read from what age canyoning makes sense, which tour works as a family tour and what to look out for with the little ones.

From what age can children go canyoning?

With us: from 10 years, accompanied by an adult (parent or aunt/uncle etc.). This minimum age is not arbitrary – it comes from the safety standards:

  • Physical requirement: Children must be able to perform climbing and swimming movements in a coordinated way
  • Cognitive requirement: Being able to understand and follow instructions, even under a bit of stress
  • Equipment: A wetsuit, helmet and harness can only be fitted properly from a height of approx. 1.40 m

For younger children (6–9 years), gentle streams / gorge hikes are often more suitable – that isn’t canyoning in the strict sense, but can be discussed on request.

Which tour is the family tour?

Clearly: the Almbachklamm. It is designed as a beginner tour with moderate jumps, calm swimming sections and an atmosphere that adults will find beautiful too. Minimum age 10, around 2 hours in the gorge – with changing and briefing, a perfect family half-day.

The Strubklamm, Grabenbach or the multi-day tours to Friuli/Ticino are not suitable for families – minimum age 16.

What parents should know

  • You come along – children under 14 only with an accompanying adult
  • Jumps are optional – every jump has an alternative via climbing or abseiling
  • The guide knows children’s tours – pace and explanations are age-appropriate
  • Allow enough time – with changing, briefing and the tour you’ll be out for a few hours: not a sprint, but not a leisurely stroll either. Allow extra time for tiredness
  • A change of clothes for after the tour is a must – children cool down faster

How do you prepare your child?

1. Check swimming ability

Your child should be able to keep afloat in the water – not swim at Olympic level, but confidently. With a basic swimming badge (Seepferdchen or higher), things are usually fine. If in doubt: call us beforehand and we’ll give you an honest assessment.

2. Managing expectations

Tell your child honestly what to expect: cold water, small jumps, lots of fun. Don’t promise “guaranteed no fear of heights" experiences – even small jumps can seem big to a child. The guide talks through every jump beforehand, and your child decides for themselves.

3. Explain the equipment

A wetsuit feels unusually tight, and putting it on takes a few minutes. Helmet and harness are not a sign of fear – they are standard. Just knowing that this is normal will reassure your child.

Family gift idea

Looking for a shared family experience as a gift? A canyoning voucher for the Almbachklamm tour is ideal: parents and children experience it together, nobody has to go alone, and the memory lasts.

Frequently asked questions

What if my child suddenly gets scared?

That's okay and it happens. Our guides respond calmly and without pressure – jumps can be skipped and shortcuts are possible. If necessary, we can also shorten the tour.

How cold is it really for children?

Stream water is 10–14 °C, and children cool down faster than adults. The 5 mm wetsuit protects well, but after a few hours on the tour the little ones are more tired and colder than the grown-ups. Straight into warm clothes and a snack afterwards – and they love it.

Do the parents need to be fit too?

Average fitness is enough. If you can manage sporty mountain hikes without problems, you can also manage the Almbachklamm. If you have physical limitations (knees, back), call us beforehand.

What if 2 children are of different ages/fitness levels?

We're happy to split the group for individual sections of the tour. For larger family groups (aunts, uncles, cousins), two guides can also run in parallel – ask us about a private group.

Are birthday groups with children possible?

Of course – a children's birthday with canyoning is a classic. From age 10, group size by arrangement, with an age-appropriate tour design.
