Canyoning Salzburg: The Most Beautiful Gorges – Your Guide for 2026

Salzburg is one of Austria's top canyoning regions – crystal-clear streams, photogenic water-carved gorges and a perfect mix of gentle beginner tours and demanding classics. This guide gives you an honest overview of which canyoning tours in and around Salzburg are worth it for whom – and what to look out for when choosing.

Why Salzburg for canyoning?

In summer, the Salzburg region combines everything canyoneers are looking for: cool mountain streams from the Hohe Tauern, limestone gorges with their characteristic plunge pools, easily accessible meeting points and a dense network of state-certified canyoning guides. In the Tennengau, the Pinzgau and the neighbouring Salzkammergut you will find tours ranging from family taster trips to jump classics with 10-metre drops.

The canyoning tours by Badis Adventures in Salzburg

1. Canyoning Almbachklamm – the beginner classic

The Almbachklamm near Hallein is THE entry-level tour in Salzburg. Gentle jumps, natural water slides and crystal-clear pools make it the ideal choice for families, first-timers and anyone who wants to give canyoning a try. Minimum age: 10 years. Duration: approx. 2 hours in the gorge.

2. Canyoning Strubklamm – challenging jumps of up to 10 metres

If the Almbachklamm has whetted your appetite, the Strubklamm between Faistenau and Tiefbrunnau is the logical next step. One of the most spectacular gorges in the Salzburg region, with numerous jumps of varying heights, abseiling spots and narrow passages polished smooth by the water. Minimum age: 16 years. Duration: approx. 3–4 hours.

3. Canyoning Grabenbach (Jabron) – the insider tip

The Grabenbach (Jabron) is a rarely travelled gorge for canyoneers looking for something special away from the well-known tours. We deliberately offer it as a private tour or in small groups – exclusive and intense.

Which tour is right for me?

Tour Difficulty Min. age Duration Recommended for
Almbachklamm Beginner 10 ~2 h Families, first-time visitors
Strubklamm Intermediate (sporty) 16 3–4 h Sporty adults, stag/hen parties
Grabenbach (Jabron) Intermediate 16 ~3 h Experienced canyoneers, private groups

When is the best time for canyoning in Salzburg?

The canyoning season in Salzburg typically runs from May to the end of September. In May and June the Almbachklamm usually carries more water – great for ambitious tours, more demanding for beginners. The water reaches its warmest temperatures in August. We check the water levels and weather before every tour; in case of high water or thunderstorms, the tour is postponed.

What is included in the price?

  • Complete canyoning equipment: wetsuit, helmet, climbing harness, safety gear
  • Guided tour with a state-certified canyoning guide
  • Insurance

Frequently asked questions

Do I need previous experience?

For the Almbachklamm: no. You only need to be able to swim and have average fitness. For the Strubklamm and Grabenbach, some first canyoning experience plus solid swimming skills help.

How cold is the water?

Mountain stream water stays brisk at 10–14 °C even in high summer. Your wetsuit insulates you – after the first few minutes the cold is no longer an issue.

What do I wear under the wetsuit?

Swim trunks or a swimsuit. Optionally functional underwear if you feel the cold easily. Important: dry clothes to change into after the tour.

What happens in bad weather?

Light rain is no problem – we get wet in the water anyway. In case of thunderstorms or a sharp rise in water levels, the tour is postponed or cancelled for safety reasons.

How do I book?

The quickest way is by phone on +43 650 796 21 20 or by email to [email protected]. In peak season (July/August) we recommend reserving at least 1–2 weeks in advance.
