Canyoning with Kids: the Family Guide to Your First Tour

Canyoning with kids? One of the most beautiful family activities there is – as long as you pick the right tour. Here you'll learn from what age canyoning makes sense, which tour is THE family tour, and what to watch out for with the little ones.

From what age is canyoning possible for children?

With us: from 10 years, accompanied by an adult (a parent, aunt, uncle, etc.). This lower limit isn't arbitrary – it comes from the safety standards:

  • Physical requirement: climbing and swimming movements must be performed in a coordinated way
  • Cognitive requirement: the child must understand and follow instructions, even under a little stress
  • Equipment: wetsuit, helmet and harness only fit properly from a height of about 1.40 m

For younger children (6–9 years), gentle stream walks / gorge hikes are often a better fit – that's not canyoning in the strict sense, but it can be discussed on request.

Which tour is THE family tour?

Easy: the Almbachklamm. It's designed as a beginners' tour with moderate jumps, calm swimming sections and an atmosphere that's still stunning for adults too. Minimum age 10, around 2 hours in the canyon – with changing and briefing it makes a perfect family half-day.

The Strubklamm, Grabenbach and the multi-day trips to Friuli/Ticino are not family-friendly – minimum age 16.

What parents should know

  • You're right there with them – children under 14 only with an accompanying adult
  • Jumps are optional – every jump has an alternative via climbing or abseiling
  • The guide knows kids' tours – pace and explanations are age-appropriate
  • Allow enough time – with changing, briefing and the tour itself you'll be out for a few hours: not a sprint, but not a leisurely stroll either. Build in buffer time for tiredness
  • A change of clothes for after the tour is mandatory – children cool down faster

How do you prepare your child?

1. Check swimming confidence

Your child should be able to keep themselves afloat – not Olympic swimming, but confidently. With a basic swimming badge, things are usually fine. If in doubt: call us beforehand, we'll give you an honest assessment.

2. Manage expectations

Tell your child honestly what's coming: cold water, small jumps, lots of fun. Don't promise a "guaranteed no fear of heights" experience – even small jumps can feel big to a child. The guide talks through every jump beforehand, and your child decides for themselves.

3. Explain the equipment

A wetsuit feels unusually tight, and putting it on takes a few minutes. Helmet and harness are not a sign of danger – they're standard. Knowing that this is normal is already reassuring for your child.

Family gift idea

Looking for a shared family experience as a present? A canyoning voucher for the Almbachklamm tour is ideal: parents and child share the experience, nobody has to go alone, and the memory lasts.

Frequently asked questions

What if my child suddenly gets scared?

That's okay and it happens. Our guides respond calmly and without pressure – jumps can be skipped, shortcuts are possible. If necessary, we can also shorten the tour.

How cold is it for children, really?

The stream water is 10–14 °C, and children cool down faster than adults. The 5 mm wetsuit protects well, but after a few hours on tour the little ones are wearier and colder than the grown-ups. Straight into warm clothes and a snack afterwards – then they love it.

Do the parents need to be fit too?

Averagely fit is enough. If you can manage sporty mountain hikes without trouble, you'll manage the Almbachklamm too. If you have physical limitations (knees, back), call us beforehand.

What if 2 children are different ages or fitness levels?

We're happy to split the group for individual sections of the tour. For bigger family crews (aunts, uncles, cousins) we can also run two parallel guides – ask us about a private group.

Are birthday groups with kids possible?

Sure – a kids' birthday with canyoning is a classic. From age 10, group size by arrangement, with an age-appropriate tour design.
