When exactly should I come to Salzburg for canyoning? May or July? September or August? The right answer depends on what you want – more water, warmer water, emptier gorges or better weather. This month-by-month guide breaks down the Salzburg canyoning season honestly.

May – season opener with plenty of water
May marks the start of the season. Snowmelt in the mountains often delivers a lot of water, which makes the gorges powerful but also more demanding. The water is still very cold. If you want May, go for the Almbachklamm – our Strubklamm season usually starts in early/mid June, once the levels drop.
- Plus: Few crowds, almost no tourists
- Plus: Powerful water, an impressive gorge atmosphere
- Minus: Cold water – only pleasant with a thicker wetsuit
- Minus: Changeable weather, tours get postponed more often
June – the "real" season begins
From mid-June all tours run regularly. Levels are at a good height, the water is slowly warming up, the weather is usually more stable. The best time for the Strubklamm, because the medium-high levels maximise the fun factor of the jumps and slides.
July & August – high season
Classic high season. Warmest water, longest daylight, best jumping conditions. But: also the most other groups, the highest booking pressure and more frequent thunderstorm days. Reservations at least 1–2 weeks in advance are recommended.
- Plus: Warmest water (jumps without the sting)
- Plus: Most stable weather (fewest tour cancellations)
- Plus: All tours in top condition
- Minus: Biggest crowds
- Minus: Afternoon thunderstorm risk – we often schedule tours for the morning
September – the insider tip
For many locals this is the most beautiful time for canyoning. The water is still warm enough, the weather is often more stable than at the height of summer (fewer thunderstorms), the gorges are emptier and the autumn light gives the canyons a special glow. If you can pick your month, pick September.
October – season finale with limitations
In early October some tours still run, but the water is noticeably colder and the days are getting shorter. The Almbachklamm is realistic until early October, the Strubklamm usually only in stable weather. From mid-October the season is over.
When is the best time for your tour?
Family holiday with kids
July or August – the warmest water, jumps feel refreshing in the heat, and a higher chance of stable weather.
Sporty, ambitious group
June or September. More water in June for a more intense experience; fewer crowds and more stable weather in September.
Spontaneous trip on short notice
Early and late season (May/June and September/October). July/August is peak season – spontaneous requests do work out, but it's tighter.
Best prices / fewer crowds
May, early June, September, early October. In these periods we have more flexibility, including on group rates.
Weather and water-level strategy
Regardless of the month: we check the current weather and water-level situation before every tour. If thunderstorms or high water are forecast, the tour is postponed or cancelled – with no cancellation fee. That's a safety standard, not a courtesy.
In practice this means: plan your canyoning day flexibly. If you're in Salzburg for just one day and are counting on canyoning, you carry a higher residual risk that the weather won't cooperate. With a 2–3 day stay there is practically always a good day.

Frequently asked questions
Can you go canyoning in the rain?
Light rain, yes – we're in the water anyway. Heavy rain or a thunderstorm forecast: no. When water levels rise sharply, the gorges become dangerous.
When should I book?
High season (July/August weekends): at least 1–2 weeks in advance. Early/late season or weekdays: 3–5 days are enough. That said, we also try to accommodate last-minute requests.
Which month has the warmest water?
August. Even then, the creek water stays at 13–15 °C – this is no swimming pool. The wetsuit is mandatory all year round.
When is it least crowded?
May and mid/late September are the quietest. June and early September are still relaxed too. July/August weekends are busy.
